TOOL
Dual Citizenship Awareness Tool
Surface Dutch renunciation themes, possible exceptions, option vs naturalisation, and home-country friction before you apply for Dutch nationality.
- Orientation bands — not a dual-passport approval
- Naturalisation default renunciation vs option differences
- Exception themes to document (not self-certify)
- Home-country and long-stay-abroad loss risks to verify

Before you start
Planning view only — not immigration or legal advice. This tool does not decide whether you may hold two nationalities. Confirm renunciation, exceptions, and loss rules on government.nl and IND (and with qualified advisers in both countries for complex cases).

Dual nationality decision topics
Map Dutch renunciation themes and home-country friction before you apply. This is awareness — not a dual-passport verdict.

How this tool works
What we surface
We map deterministic awareness topics: route (naturalisation vs option), Dutch renunciation default, possible exception themes, willingness to renounce, home-country friction, and long residence outside NL/EU.
What we do not do
We do not certify exceptions, list every nationality’s renunciation law, or promise you can keep dual citizenship. Official pages and home authorities remain the source of truth.
Option vs naturalisation
Option often skips renunciation when you qualify. Naturalisation usually requires renunciation if possible. Check IND option categories before assuming the default rule.
Permanent residence as an alternative
If you will not renounce and no exception or option path fits, PR can stabilise stay rights without changing nationality.
Official sources
Verify every dual nationality decision on these portals. This tool is awareness only.
Frequently asked questions
No. It surfaces decision topics from Dutch dual nationality and renunciation guidance plus home-country friction points. Only IND / government.nl and your home authorities decide what applies to you.
For naturalisation, the Netherlands generally requires renunciation if possible. Exceptions exist and are case-specific. Option usually does not require renunciation when you qualify. Confirm on government.nl and IND.
IND notes that option usually does not require renouncing your other nationality and does not require demonstrating integration. Option is only for specific legal categories — years of residence alone are not enough.
In some cases, adult dual nationals who live outside the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the EU for a long period without renewing a Dutch passport or declaration can lose Dutch nationality automatically. Read government.nl loss-of-citizenship guidance.
Naturalisation may not fit unless a recognised exception applies or option is available. Permanent residence can stabilise stay rights without changing nationality.
